You’ll Never Be Lonely If You Have Music in Your Life
So says Marie, 91, my most “senior” student.
Why is music such a powerful force in life? How is that we can feel the embrace of sound, be comforted, consoled, challenged, motivated, inspired, vitalized? Whatever it is we’re looking for, we can find in music. We go to our favorite albums, internet radio... If we’re really fortunate, we go to our instrument and make music with our own two hands.
We read about living in the moment, trying meditation or yoga, perhaps. Quieting our minds and settling into the music, releasing all our concerns and busy-ness, if only for a few minutes, especially if we’re playing our instrument in a mindful way, can help counterbalance the hectic lives many of us lead.
Simply enjoying what we usually label “practice” time is key. Maybe we should refer to practice as something else . I think the word seems to imply we are looking to a future event where everything will have “come together.” This never fully happens, of course, because we’re always moving forward, learning new pieces, techniques, concepts. Music, like life, is the daily experience.
